Howard to replace Larry King?

Forget American Idol, Howard Stern's name has now been tossed in to the ring for the lead position of a much grander television institution--as Larry King's replacement on CNN's Larry King Live. Larry King announced Monday that he plans to detach his suspenders after 25 years of nightly interviews with thousands of celebrities from flashes in the pan to intergenerational icons. Though King isn't retiring until November, entertainment gossip hounds began speculating on his replacement before the withered birdman finished croaking out the announcement. CBS News reports that Howard Stern's name has been mentioned in discussions about Larry King's replacement. The timing couldn't be worse for executives as Sirius XM radio who are currently in negotiations to re-sign Howard Stern after his contract expires in January 2011. While Stern has pretty much put the kibosh on rumors he could take over Simon Cowell's seat on American Idol, the prospect of 'Howard Stern Live' is likely to start a whole new wave of outrage from mainstream media outlets offended by Stern's brand of humor.
King said if it were up to him, he'd name American Idol cheesemaster Ryan Seacrest as his successor, but then quickly added: "But I don't know if he's interested in politics."
